Water Quality Advisory

Dear Water System Customer:

In an effort to be proactive and transparent in managing and protecting the Tri-Town’s public water supply, the Tri-Town Board recently conducted voluntary testing for the emerging contaminant known as per- and polyflouroalky substances (PFAS) as part of the design of the new Tri-Town Regional Water Treatment Plant.  PFAS has been detected at low levels in the water supply for Braintree, Randolph and Holbrook averaging 24.5 parts per trillion (the current EPA/MassDEP Federal and State Health Advisory is 70 parts per trillion).

Out of an abundance of caution and given our commitment to keeping you informed, we are providing this information even though the levels do not trigger a notice under drinking water regulations.  Efforts are already underway to pilot and implement a treatment system to reduce PFAS from the water supply.  The Tri-Town will continue to test PFAS levels on a regular basis and update the communities on our progress.

Please note that our Tri-Town water supply source meets or exceeds public water supply quality standards. We remain committed to providing a clean and safe water supply to residents.  The Tri-Town Board is working in conjunction with MassDEP.  Please visit the state website at https://www.mass.gov/info-details/per-and-polyfluoroalkyl-substances-pfas for up to date information about PFAS.

PFAS (per- and polyflouroalky substances) are a large group of man-made chemicals that have been used since the 1950’s in a number of products including nonstick cookware, water resistant clothing, food packaging materials, and firefighting foam.
