The Inspectional Services Department encompasses the Building Commissioner, building, plumbing, gas and wiring inspectors, Code Enforcement officers and clerk. The Building Commissioner is responsible for and oversees these employees. In accordance with the State Building Code, the Commissioner is authorized anddirected to enforce the provisions of the building codes. The office receives applications, reviews construction documents and issues permits for the erection and alteration, demolition and moving of buildings and structures, and inspects the premises for which such permits have been issued.
The Commissioner enforces compliance with the provisions of the State Building Code and the town’s bylaws, acts as ADA Coordinator, and is the liaison to theZoning Board of Appeals and the Planning Board.
Code Enforcement Officers conduct investigations, administer municipal sanitary codes, and enforce local zoning regulations. Work is performed in strict conformance with all laws, regulations, and departmental policy. The Code Enforcement Officers recommend corrective actions to bring about compliance, determine time frames for compliance achievement; and issues notices of violations, fines, and citations. These inspections are overseen by the Building Commissioner, and the Director of Public Health who reviews the work through conference and who, when necessary, provides assistance in meeting desired case objectives.
